Reporting to the Director of the Tutoring and Writing Center, Professional Writing Tutors help students engage thoughtfully in writing and revision, offering empathy and feedback in 1:1 visits. Professional writing tutors should be experienced in long-form academic writing projects such as theses and dissertations. Responsibilities include supporting students in 1:1 tutoring sessions (in person and remote), creating resources such as templates, visual aids, guides, checklists, or tip sheets to help students understand common writing challenges and expectations across disciplines, assisting with writing groups and writing studios, developing and facilitating student-facing workshops based on interest and need, engaging in supervisory meetings and team meetings as scheduled, completing visit notes for tutoring sessions and alerting center leadership about any concerning sessions, engaging in professional development, team building, and reflective practice, and other duties as assigned. Requirements include a Master’s degree in Rhetoric and Composition, Education, or other writing-intensive field (Ph.D. preferred), demonstrated experience working with writers engaged in long-form writing projects such as theses and dissertations, in-depth understanding of academic writing conventions, research methodologies, source integration, and citation standards (MLA, APA, Chicago) as applied in advanced research writing, skill at identifying students' struggles and addressing them patiently and creatively, ability to make students feel comfortable and motivated, explaining complex writing techniques in an accessible way, ability to adapt to each individual student’s needs, experience supporting neurodivergent students preferred, and experience supporting English language learners and multilingual students preferred.
