In protest at the police action and excesses on the activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir across the country Jamaat secretary general and former minister Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid issued the following statement on February 12.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is protesting against the wholesale arrest, atrocities, charging of baton by the police on its activists and also of the activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir. I also denounce vehemently the police action on the peaceful rallies and procession of the democratic organisations.

PostHeaderIcon Govt challenges HC verdict on warrant of precedence

The government on Sunday filed a petition with the Supreme Court seeking stay on a High Court verdict declaring illegal the existing Warrant of Precedence. An HC bench on Thursday directed the government to issue a new Warrant of Precedence for the republic's officers, giving district judges and equivalent judicial officers precedence over the chiefs of armed forces, and government secretaries.The Attorney General’s Office filed the petition with the court of the chamber judge of the Appellate Division on behalf of the government. The chamber judge is likely to hear the petition in the afternoon.

PostHeaderIcon PM leaves for Kuwait

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left here for Kuwait Sunday afternoon on a three-day state visit at the invitation of Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. A special plane sent by Kuwait’s Emir Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah carrying the prime minister and the members of her entourage took off from the Zia International Airport at 2:07pm. Awami League leaders, including Deputy Leader in Parliament Syeda Sajeda Chowdury, Finance Minister AMA Muhith and Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury, chiefs of three services, dean of the diplomatic corps, and high civil and military officials, among others, saw off the prime minister at the VVIP terminal of the airport.


 

On Monday, the prime minister will hold official talks with the Kuwaiti prime minister on a wide range of bilateral issues encompassing development assistance, investment and labor issues. Bangladesh will seek assistance for development of communications infrastructures, including the mega-project of Padma Bridge, and support for the country’s energy sector, officials said. Presently, Kuwait Development Fund is providing aid worth US$ 660 million for 21 projects in Bangladesh. A proposal for recruiting more workforces from Bangladesh will come up prominently during the talks with the Kuwaiti leaders, the officials here said. Some 2.5 lakh Bangladeshis are now employed in the oil-rich Middle-eastern country. Before the official talks, Hasina will pay a courtesy call on Emir Sabah IV Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on Monday morning at Dewani Emir. The prime minister will return home early Wednesday.
